1964: Paul Simon’s Plea For Work

…to England where my heart lies…….

In 1964 when Paul Simon had just arrived in England he was eagerly looking for a gig in one of the many folk clubs. Not so easy for an American.

In this letter that you can read through this link http://www.culture24.org.uk/places+to+go/north+west/liverpool/art25849 Paul Simon mentions that he has recorded an album recently. Well that was a bit optimistic. He recorded two songs for a never to be released album for Topic Records.

  1. I tried to transcript the letter about 3 year ago in Japanese fan site.

    June 12, 1964

    Dear Ted,
Last Tuesday evening I was working at the
?location? in London with Paul McNeill and Redd (sullivan).
?name of person? approached me about doing a tour of the
.. folk clubs. He said that you were the man to
contact concerning this matter. I have worked in all
the major clubs in London including the Troubadour, The
Black Horse, The Roundhouse and the enterprise.
I also record for Columbia Records in the States and will cut
my first LP for Topic Records over here. I would
appreciate any work that you could give me between the
first week of August to the first week of September.
The fee is seven pounds and expenses. If you are interested
you can write to me at 15(8)4 Haverstock Hill , London NW3.

    Respectfully.

    Paul Simon

    1. I have asked for a transcript of this letter Paul Simon wrote, at Wiltshire County Council. A copy will be made available shortly to me, so I can add the names that now are missing.
