1982: Simon & Garfunkel in Japan

In 1982 Simon & Garfunkel, on their first reunion tour, visited Japan. For the Japanes fans it was long awaited visit, as they never performed there before as a duo.

The played 5 shows in 2 cities,Osaka and Tokyo:

1982-05-07 Osaka Japan Osaka Stadium
1982-05-08 Osaka Japan Osaka Stadium
1982-05-10 Tokyo Japan Ko-rakuen Stadium
1982-05-11 Tokyo Japan Ko-rakuen Stadium
1982-05-12 Tokyo Japan Ko-rakuen Stadium

Click on the above link and you will find a report of this visit. It is in Japanese, but the pictures will also tell the story. Maybe one of the Japanese readers might be able to give as a translation in due time.

These shows were (partly) recorded by fans in the audience. If there were any radio-broadcasts were planned, is not known to me. Info about these will be shared soon.

  1. Hi Rob from Holland!

All concerts have been recorded and brought out as 6 bootlegs.Still for sale in Japan but very expensive! Fortunately these 6 bootlegs are still available but not as a torrent anymore. If you want to have the link to these posted bootlegs please write me to the following email-address that I always use: Corry Hoekman cmjphoekman@casema.nl

  2. H Rob,

I did also a search for you regarding pics and posters of the Simon and Garfunkel tour in 1982. Will try another search `cause the last one did not deliver much material you can use. I will try to find the dl-link of the six-pack and after doing so and found you are able to download the entire sixpack. Groeten Corry

  3. Hi Rob: I`ve found the “sicpack post” for downloading. Not by torrents just by a server. If you have time please download in the so called “free modus”. The best fiel provider to use for downloading all six concerts is File Factory. Of course it is a little bit slow and once in an hour you are allowed to take a download from their server. Sometimes it is too busy for using the free modus. The only thing to do is: try again later! If you do not know how it works I will download these ones for you and unrar them. I also have a Gmail-account So I am able to upload the six concerts to you having a Gmail-account too! Rob I do not see any artwork in the post itself here`s the link:have a good time with that working and I will have mine! Groeten Corry

Corry

  5. Rob: it`a hell of a job diging out this sbuject. I`ve found the entire Osaka-concert and some add. photos. The problem is the photographs have been ecryped so I only give you the link. First post regarding the records available from Osaka: if you want the setlist please feel free to write to me. W both are Dutch ain`t it? Concert page Osaka: nothing to be found anumore on this page I controlled it for you:

  8. Hi Rob started searching again. A small review coming from Japan It@s a nasty page bacause I was not allowed to C and P. Here it is

    REVIEW:

The reunited unglimmer twins toured Japan and Europe in the spring/summer of 1982; this was one of three nights in at a huge Tokyo stadium. May 10 has definitely surfaced on bootleg, but I’m not sure about the 12th. All the classics are covered of course, including quite a few of Simon’s solo hits, but you get a sense that the pair is just going through the motions. Indeed, you can detect a degree of awkwardness between Paul and Artie. (For example, at the start of Disc 2 Simon starts to address the audience and says he wants to have a “conversation”; then, after a long pause, he gives up and says he’s at a loss for words, almost as if he caught a glimpse of Garfunkel glaring at him for being such a putz. (Or maybe Garfunkel had left the stage temporarily.)

As one astute S&G fan site summarized this period for the band:

“In 1981, Paul appeared on Art’s Scissors-Cut LP, adding vocals to a song called “In Cars.” Shortly afterward, they reunited for the 9/19/81 concert in New York’s Central Park. Following that, they announced plans for a world tour and a new album. The tour (1982-83) happened. The album didn’t.”

As there is substantial crowd noise – clapping, plus jostling sounds from the taper himself – and the stadium having typically cavernous acoustics, the sound is really only average. Vocals are fairly clear, but still… I suspect only die-hard S&G fans will want to listen to this more than once.

Nice artwork – it’s a takeoff on the official The Concert In Central Park. Although the thought does occur that if you want some good-sounding live S&G, why not simply pick that album up since most of he same songs were performed? — OSWALD

      1. Hallo Rob,

    1. Thanks for the entries and pictures. I will try to dedicate a page to these concerts (besides the posts here) in Japan. Your help is appreciated. (I keep it in English for all the other readers).

    http://rthimel.free.fr/Paul-Simon-nouvelle-version/fs-sg-korakuen-11-may-82.htm

  13. Regarding your PDF-file I have tried the following. Not able to translate this doc into English. I am able to convert a PDF into a Word doc. This Word-doc is to be converted into a HTML document. I am sorry that I am not able to upload this HTML-document. I am only able to give the photographs to you without any description. Please keep in touch. When I am done with this entire proces I will upload the pages with all photos. Kind regards Corry
