1963 -1964 Live in New York City ?

Gerde's

At the time we are looking for factual information about the shows Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel did in 1963 or 1964 in these famous places in New York City:

– The Bitter End (possibly ?)
– Café Wha
– Gerde’s Folk City

There’s a poster – also for sale on Ebay – that mentions S&G performing in Folk City during February 16-28

in 1964 (as Columbia Records is mentioned) or was it 1965?

gv-IMG_1071In his book about his Bitter End, he mentions (on pages 16-17) that he and Billy Fields went to see Simon & Garfunkel, who were playing “on the corner of Bleecker and Sullivan streets“.

If there’s anyone out there who could confirm these performances or shed a light that would be great.

Simon & Garfunkel could also have been billed as “Kane & Garr” or “Landis & Garr”.

2015: April 18 – last show of the tour

After playing the US in 2014, Australia & NewZealand early this year, the European tour ended yesterday in Amsterdam. And what a treat it was to see those two artist play with the musicians they brought with them. A night full of musicality and respect for each others ” songbook “.

They even blended well in songs like ” Every breath you take ”  and ” Mrs. Robinson “. A song like ” Bridge over troubled water ” sounded as if it was performed for the first time ever. Was it always Art Garfunkel’s angelic voice that carried the song, now the song was sung with the soul-full voices of both Sting and Paul. A new masterpiece.

On Youtube you will find enough examples to listen to it yourself.

All we can now say is ” Thank you Sting and Paul Simon ” for a wonderfull tour and show.

1973; Spencer Leigh’s “Paul Simon – Now and then” published

In 1973 Raven Books in the UK, published one of the first, if not the first, biographies of Paul Simon:

Leigh 00“Paul Simon – Now and Then’, written by Spencer Leigh. It was the first book that told the musical career of Mr. Simon. Very little was known at the time about the career, at the time some 20 years old.  And the book has some errors, i.e. like about the recordings made before (!) the Simon & Garfunkel period In 1976 a Supplement was added to the first addition, with additions and corrections. I treasure this book still very much.

For your reading pleasure I have scanned the Supplement:

If you click on the thumbnails you will get a very readable scan on your screen.

Paul Simon & Sting – Unforgettable

The review in Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant was very enthusiastic about the show of March 22:

Paul Simon & Sting: we zullen het nooit vergeten

Curieuze combinatie: een 73-jarige New Yorker uit de folk op tournee met een tien jaar jongere Noord-Engelsman uit de new wave. Toch werkt het voortreffelijk, zo bleek in de Amsterdamse Ziggo Dome, waar Paul Simon en Sting op 18 april nog eens optreden.

(Paul Simon & Sting: we will never forget ‘althought the combination looked curious: a 73-year-old New Yorker from the folk-music on tour with a 10 year younger Norhtern Englishman from the new wave. It worked excellent, in the Ziggo Dome in amsterdam, where Simon & Sting perform again on April 18)
