Paul Simon in the UK 1965

Found this on a folkmusic related forum:

[…]  folk club in “The Green Man” at the top of Blackheath Hill about 1965/66ish, notable among the guests was Paul Simon

[…] Anyone remember a club over the big pub at Swiss Cottage in North London. I went there a few times but can’t remember who the residents were.
A well known contemporary perfomer turned up minus guitar and asked if he could use mine. Unwittingly, I said yes.
I could see the scratches appearing down the front of my guitar from his plectrum (plectrum? what’s that?)
Anyway as resident at the Folk Cellar at CSH and having bought an expensive folk-style guitar (anyone remember Doctor Tomastic treble strings for finger style playing?),
I used to take a well-worn old nylon-strung guitar as a spare and when singers turned up minus instrument, that was the one they got!
The same singer-songwriter came and sang from the floor at the Cellar and asked for a booking. On saying Yes he then told me to contact his AGENT.
One of the reasons I then packed it up. Was getting too professional & the most the Sharp House could afford at the time was ten quid. Even Paul Simon got that!

Anyone any thoughts?

Simon & Garfunkel in 1969 – a follow up

Earlier this week I wrote about the fact that booklet of the ´Live 1969´ cd did not give the date for the St. Louis 1969 show.
Which turned out to be Novemer 2nd when Simon & Garfunkel played Kiel Auditorium.

Also in that booklet it is mentioned that ´Old friends / Bookends´ was recorded on November 1st of 1969 in Toledo.

So far no newspaper information has been found about that 1969 show. But today I found a mentioning of Simon & Garfunkel performing on November 1st at the University of Toledo,– at the bottom of the article –  in 1968. So a mix-up of years?

PS:
Also the following 1968 dates were added to the main 1968 list:

1968-04-07 Iowa City, University of Iowa
1968-10-04 Columbus, Ohio State University, St. John Arena
1968-10-25 Athens, Ohio University

New dates added to S&G 1966 Section

College touring was ´hot´ in the late 60´s. Students were very eager to see all the new artists, many were contracted to play on campus. So were Simon & Garfunkel, who embarked on College Tour(s).
Often they were a supporting act, like the shwos they did with The Mama´s & The Papa´s in Anaheim, for a 3 night run of shows. Or they were billed equally with groups like Eric Burdon & The Animals or The Young Rascals.

Anyway, here are some new dates:

1966 November 23: Meadville, Allegheny College
1966 December 9: Oberlin, Oberlin College

There are even more new ones added to the list today!

Simon & Garfunkel Live in 1969

The wonderful cd released by Columbia in 2008 ´Simon & Garfunkel – Live 1969´ has great perfomances of their 1969 US-tour. Unfortunately the booklet could not tell  when the songs included form their St. Louis show were recorded. Well it took me some time but here´s the ´evidence´:

Simon & Garfunkel performed in St. Louis Kiel Auditorium on November 2nd 1969!

And even stranger is the fact that the song on the same  ´Live 1969´ cd ´Old friends/Bookends Theme´is said to be recorded in Toledo (Ohio) on November 1st, while advertisments point in the direction of Wichita in Kansas:

The ´Bye bye love´ recording that ended up on the ´Bridge over troubled water´album was indeed recorded in Ohio, probably in the State University in Columbus.
