Not all shows were ´sell outs´ from what I understand. A show in the Kiel Auditorium had to be cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. But there were also some performances on campus during several Homecoming Festivals, like the one pictured above, but also one in Miami Unveristy´s Millett Hall on October 13th. There may have been more.

The Texas´ Baytown newspaper mentions a performance or contribution of Paul Simon coming up on August 7th in the Saint Paul´s church  as part of Festival of All Saints. Not so strange at all since Paul was touring and recording with gospelgroup The Jessy Dixon Singers. But I am trying to find out more on that ´gig´still.

1972 Paul Simon in San Francisco?

While looking for information about Stephen Stills & Manassas concerts in 1972 I found this small anouncement:

It was published in the Daily Review of October 26th 1972.

1972-nov-04: Paul Simon, San Francisco, Masonic Auditorium

Paul Simon was in 1973 touring to promote his ‘ There goes rhymin’ Simon’ album….This one is totally new to me!  A different Paul Simon? Anyone any ideas?

Paul Simon: 38 years ago on May 8th 1972

This weekend it was exactly 38 years ago that Paul Simon played a Benefit Show for the George McGovern Election Campaign. On May 8th 1972 Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Paul Simon played in Ohio’s Cleveland.

For Paul this time it was a solo performance, without the help of Art Garfunkel. A month later, in New York City’s Madison Square Gardens, the two would play, also for George McGovern’s benefit, on June 14th.

Paul played the following songs (as far as we know now):

-Me and Julio down by the schoolyard
-Congratulations
-Mother and child reunion
-Cecilia
-The boxer
-Mrs. Robinson
-The sounds of silence
-Bridge over troubled water

This performance was extra special, as ‘ Con9ratulations’  was and is hardly performed live by Paul Simon.

1966: Simon & Garfunkel on Canadian TV

When ‘ The sound of silence’  was still high up in the charts, early 1966, Simon & Garfunkel were invited to a Canadian TV Show called ‘ Let’s sing out’.

According to the site: ‘ Originating from university campuses all across Canada, Let’s Sing Out featured audience participation as students joined Canadian and American guest stars in familiar and popular folk songs. The weekly half-hour series was seen on Fridays throughout the CTV network, beginning October 11, 1963. Host for the show was Winnipeg-born Oscar Brand.  The series aired on CTV until it was picked up by the CBC in the fall of 1966 and ran for one more season.’

Simon and Garfunkel were seen in two episodes:

1966-02-17 – Let’s sing out – Toronto, University College, University of Toronto, Simon and Garfunkel, Sharon Trostin and Steve Jorgunsen
1966-03-24 – Let’s sing out – Toronto, University College, University of Toronto, Simon and Garfunkel, Mark Spoelstra and Zaharia join Oscar Brand.

See YouTube for some very nice footage (but I am not sure from which ‘ Let’s sing out’  episodes these come, maybe the March episode had material which was left of the first). Enjoy them while you can!
