* update* 1964: Paul Simon’s Plea For Work

Today I received a copy of the letter Paul Simon wrote.

Addressed to club owner Ted Poole, Paul Simon’s letter is dated June 12 1964 and asks for work as part of a tour of west country folk clubs.

Here’s what Paul Simon wrote:

June 12, 1964

Dear Ted,
Last Tuesday evening I was working at the Troubadour in London with Paul McNeill and Redd Sullivan. Tom Cordery approached me about doing a tour of the Western folk clubs. He said you were the man to contact concerning this matter. I have worked in all the major clubs in London including the Troubadour, The Black Horse, The Roundhouse and the Enterprise. I also record for Columbia Records in the States and will cut my first LP for Topic Records over here. I would appreciate any work that you could give me between the first week of August to the first week of September. My fee is seven pounds and expenses. If you are interested you can write to me at 184 Havestock Hill, London NW3.

Respectfully,

Paul Simon

1967 Simon & Garfunkel in England

In 1967 Simon & Garfunkel frequented England often. They were already stars in the US, now the rest of the world was visited.

In March a 3 city tour was arranged for them.  For her book ‘Simon & Garfunkel. The definitve biography’ Victoria Kingston talked with concert promotor Roy Guest. Roy told her:’ In Birmingham, I think only three hundred people turned up; and in Manchester, perhaps five hundred. [ ] They didn’t mind that there was a small audience in Birmingham. London was a great success and they were pleased with that. And Manchester was pleasant.’
Roy Guest had teamed up with Jim Lloyd, who arranged them ‘ a spot on Manchester TV’.

Here a couple of pages from the programm:

In April they seemed to have attended a press reception, in London, held for Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Track Records.

On May 2nd  1967 the one hour show recorded for Granada TV (see RTV section of this blog) was broadcasted.
