1966: Simon & Garfunkel on tour in Sweden

Right after their success with their hit ” The sound of silence ”  Simon & Garfunkel went into the studio to record. Their first album ” Sounds of silence ”  brought at least 2 new hit records ” Homeward Bound”  and ” I am a rock “. A follow up album would be released not long after. Paul and Art went on tour in the US, mostly they were engaged to perform at Colleges, ofther during Winter Carnival or the beginning of the new school year. They also visited Europe again. So far we knew about performance in England, Holland and recent also in France. But reader Lars Fyledal from Sweden dived into the history and found out that Simon & Garfunkel toured in Sweden.

As Lars informs us:

S & G did a 3 days tour of SwedenFirst date (premiere date) was on saturday, the 2nd of July 1966 at Ängby Park, Knivsta at 21.30.

Second date was saturday, also 2nd of July 1966 at Skogsvallen,Östervåla at 23.45.

S & G also did a video at Mariefred Station for “Homeward bound” during their stayIt was done for the swedish TV and the programme PopsideThe video was made by Peter Goldmann who did the Penny Lane single video.

They were also interviewed:, but is a bit mediocre: “The reporter writes among other things that Paul will move to England and Kathy as soon as this tour ends“.

Searching for: Late January 1966 show at colleges

There seem to have been Simon & Garfunkel concerts at 3 colleges in the North-East of the US, late January 1966, in one weekend. But unfortunately we are still looking for the exact dates and names. One of them could have been at:

Brown College / University in Providence (Rhode Island)

and another may have been at:

Teacher’s College in New York City.

But we are still looking for confirmation. So if anyone has any memory or “evidence” they played there, please let us know what you know.

1966: Did S&G tour with a backing band ??

We all know that Simon & Garfunkel had a backing band on their tour in the US in 1969. The Wrecking Crew or

Cyrkle Sundazed Frontmembers of that wonderful session band were backing during large parts of the shows. But now I have two source that tell that already in 1966 they had a backing with them on stage. This band consisted of members of the group The Cyrkle. This group had a major hit with Paul Simon’s song ‘Red Rubber Ball’.

The first source is the booklet of the cd ‘The Cyrkle – Red Rubber Ball’ (Sundazed SC 11108). It says:”through Barry Kornfeld’s connections, Dawes found himself playing bass in the first road group assembled to back a fledgling folk-rock duo called Simon & Garfunkel […] During this trip with Paul and Artie […]”(page 3) And  “In the period between Beatlesque gigs and signing with

GuitarPlayer1970Columbia, Tom Dawes soaked in the warm reception that folk-rock received in the many Simon &  Garfunkel concerts” (page 4)

The second source is the magazine “Guitar Player” of March 1970 (Volume 4, nr 2). The article here is about the 1969 concerts and wites: “For the first time in four years Simon and Garfunkel had musical background support”(page 21).

But now the question is: who were backing Simon & Garfunkel in 1966? We know that Tom Dawes was one of them. The complete The Cyrkle?

If yuou have any information about this and willing to share that here, that would be great!

1966: new concert added

Joe McMichael supplied us with a new concert date in 1966:

Friday 6 May, Akron, OH Akron University Memorial Hall
One performance at 9pm, admission was $1.75.

So you can see, that these lists we maintain here are still not complete!

1966: Paul Simon farewell party in Les Cousins

The internet brings us great historical facts:

[..]all-nighters at Les Cousins! I played there many times during late ’65 and the first two months of ’66, emceeing the midnight to 7 am sessions on Saturday January 15, February 5th, 19th and March 11th. Pay was 10 Quid and I was glad to have the bookings. One of the February bookings was Paul Simon’s “Going Away” party when Paul was finally going back home to work the “Sounds of Silence” success (under duress from Columbia). That was an amazing night, Derroll Adams, Sandy Denny, Jackson C. Frank, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and the usual suspects. Meg came down and sang her “I’ll Fly Away.”[..] (see: http://mudcat.org/Detail.CFM?messages__Message_ID=2868806)
