On July 1st 1966 Simon & Garfunkel played in Sweden:

Lars Fyledal sent us a link to a newspaper in which an article appeared in which readers could tell their story about being at the 1966 concert. As you can see one fan mad even some pictures and talked to both men after the show.
http://www.nt.se/familj/minnen-av-simon-garfunkel-12101614.aspx (if you cannot read Swedish, please use your translator)

Hi! Do you know if they played more concerts in Sweden in the 60’s? (I know that they played in Sweden in -82 and in 2004.) I would really like to read the newspaper article but the link doesn’t seem to work.
This should do the trick now: http://www.nt.se/familj/minnen-av-simon-garfunkel-12101614.aspx
So far these are the only 60’s concerts in Sweden as S&G that we know off. Besides that Paul as a folk-artist also was touring Scandinavia.
I am also curious to know if they visited Germany in 1966.
Now the link works, thank you very much. It was interesting and fun to read. Do you know how many concerts S & G had when they were in Sweden in -66? (I know that they also appeared on Swedish TV when whey were in Sweden in -66.). Concerning your question about if they played concerts in Germany in -66, I remember having read somewhere that the first time they had concerts in Germany was in -82, but I have no idea if that is correct.
According to Svensk mediedatabas (The Swedish media data base), S & G appeared on a Swedish TV-show called Popside 1966-06-19:
http://smdb.kb.se/catalog/search?q=Popside+1966&x=28&y=17
(Hopefully the link works). But that does not make sense if they were in Sweden in July. (I was born in 1995, so I have no correction to suggest.).
Hello Jenny, thanks for your reply. I have not been able to find any more live-dates for Sweden then the ones mentioned to me by Lars:
2/7 Ängsby Park, early evening
2/7 Östervåla Park, late evening
3/7 Tyrolen, Gröna Lund, Stockholm
4/7 Recording of the video at Mariefred. Shown at swedish TV on 28/8 in the program PopSide.
I have just update the list of 1966 https://roboud56.wordpress.com/the-60s/1965-69/simon-garfunkel-1966/
There ar surely more performances unknown to me at the moment that one time will pop-up from an archive.
And it could be true that S&G appeared in Germanny for the first time only in 1982, during the reunion tour.
Thanks for your reply! But according to the article above S & G had a concert 1/7 in Norrköping (the article is in Swedish, so if you do not understand Swedish it is hard to read – but since I am Swedish I can help you to translate it if you want to), which means that must have been their first concert in Sweden, and the next day (2/7) they had two concerts and one concert the 3/7. Yes, I know that the recording of the video took place in Mariefred. (If I haven’t misunderstood, they played “Homeward bound” at the railway station in Mariefred.). Okay, it makes more sense if the program was shown at TV 28/8 rather than 19/6 ;). Yes, it can be true. Maybe some German readers can help you to find out when S & G had their first concert in Germany.
A translation would be very welcome. Should be fun to see the video at the Mariefred Station, have you ever seen it?
Is my list now correct:
1966-07-01 Stockholm, Sweden, TV show
1966-07-01 Norrkopping, Folkets Park
1966-07-02 Ängsby Park, early evening
1966-07-02 Östervåla Park, late evening
1966-07-03 Tyrolen, Gröna Lund, Stockholm
1966-07-04 Recording of the video at Mariefred. Shown at swedish TV on 28/8 in the program PopSide.
If not please let me know. Your help is appreciated.
Kind regards, Rob
Okay, should I write a translation of the article here or mail it to you? I have a lot to do during the rest of this week, but I can fix it later. Yes, it would be. No, I have never seen the video. Well, I have not heard of any other S & G concerts in Sweden in -66. But you could always ask Swedish fans who are older than I if they know. And do you know which TV-show S & G appeared in on 1/7? Did they do any interviews while in Sweden?
Hello Jenny, well if you have to translate it for us, that would be great.
I don’t know which show they played on July 1st. Thanks for all your help, Rob
Hi! I have not forgotten that I promised a translation of the article, but I have not had the time. It seems like the gig in Norrköping was a concert/gala with different bands performing – so it was not just S & G (it is mentioned that the others who played that night were Swedish pop groups). Anyhow, here comes a translation of the first part of the article:
Memories of Simon & Garfunkel
Anne Heinmets from Norrköping bougth the first ticket to Simon & Garfunkel’s gig in Folkets park. She is one of many readers who have contacted us on the occasion of our search for memories from the duo’s concert in Norrköping on July 1:st,1966.
” – Simon & Garfunkel were already my idols when I got to see that they were coming here. I kept nagging on my friends that we should go to the concert, and bought a ticket straight away. In fact, I bought the first ticket. During the concert, we sat in the first row, and I sang along in all songs. They were amazingly good, although even not I could imagine that they would become so famous with the years”, she tells.
Anne Heinmets did also take a dozen of photographs during the concert, and one is published in the article.
” – After the concert, we met them behind the stage, and I got their autographs. They were really nice.”
Here follows some other stories from readers who were present that unforgettable evening.
Elisabet Swartz writes: “During the evening, a dozen of Swedish pop groups of various quality performed, and suddently who guys entered the stage, sat down and played “The sound of silence” and other songs. That was very good.”
Chatrine Lind remembers: “I and some friends stood and smoked before the concert. Then a guy came up to us and asked – in English – for matches. We gave him one, but none of us were that good at English, so we did not dare to talk to him. When the concert began we were very surprised when we saw that it was Paul Simon who had come to us and asked for matches.”
To be continued. Three more stories are to be translated…
Good afternoon! Here comes next part of the article:
Göran Petersson tells: “Simon & Garfunkel gave an unforgettable memory. Two quite nerdy-looking men, one short and one tall, and one acoustic guitar enthralled the audience. Through the years I have heard The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Hollies, The Who and many others in concerts, but this remains one of my strongest concert memories.”
Margareta Gölin Gerlach writes: “One of my finest youth memories is when we sat in the old theater without walls in Folkets park a lukewarm summer night in July. It was late night, and it was dark outside the theater. Then we got to hear (and enjoy) Simon & Garfunkel live. They played all their hits. We noticed that they sounded exactly like they did on the records.”
Hans Bjurbäck tells: “Someone had started a campaign to make Swedish pop groups join some kind of trade union and the beginning of this should take place a Saturday in the middle of the summer in Folkets park in Norrköping. It was mentioned in Bildjournalen (a youth magazine), but the local advertising was poorly done, which resulted in a quite small amount of performers and spectators who were present. Simon & Garfunkel came in a bus, which drove up to the back of the theater. They had very little equipment with them, just Simon’s guitar in a case. On the concert, they performed their chart-topping songs. They seemed to be in a happy mood. Afterwards, they returned quickly to their waiting bus.”
That was the end of the article. Hope you enjoy it. If someone finds misspelled words, something is poorly trandslated, or there is someting you don’t understand – feel free to comment. My English is not perfect. 🙂
Best regards
Jenny
Thank you Jenny. I had a translation through Google-translate, but yours is the real thing. Much appreciated, Rob
You are welcome. How big was the difference between Google-translate and my translation? 😉
If you happen to have any more articles/interviews in Swedish, maybe I can help.
Oops, one error. I happened to write “…suddenly who guys…” instead of “… suddenly two guys…”. Another error (which is not my fault): one of the interviewed persons tells this took place on a Friday, but according to all other information it was a Saturday.
Wrong again: it seem that it was a Friday, but one of the interviewed persons claimed the concert took place on a Saturday. According to the newspaper ad (seen above) it was a Friday.
A bit off-topic: if you still wonder if S & G had any concerts in Germany in the 60’s, according to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Concert_in_Central_Park), their first concerts in Germany was in the reunion tour in -82. As Wikipedia is not the best source, maybe you should ask some German fans (or maybe your blog has some German readers) if they have any different information or if that is correct.
