Simon & Garfunkel 1966 Concert Information

1966

  • In 1966 Simon & Garfunkel also had a backing band. In the linernotes to the Sundazed release (SC 11108) ‘The Cyrkle – Red Rubber Ball’ Dominic Priore writes:‘Through Barry Kornfeld’s connections, Dawes found himself playing bass in the first road group assembled to back the fledging folk-rock duo called Simon & Garfunkel. During this trip with Paul & Artie,…’.  Dawes was Tom Dawes, who with Marty Fried, Earle Pickens and Don Dannemann formed The Cyrkle. So far only acoustic shows have surfaced,  if at all. All info is welcome!

  • In 1966 Simon & Garfunkel returned to Holland for a TV Show called ‘Twien’, which was broadcasted on August 12th of that year. Parts of this show are often shown on YouTube. Before or after they did a free concert in Haarlem (nearby Amsterdam). For free. It was a promise they madin 1965 to owner Cobi Schreijer who ‘discovered’ them for The Netherlands. Like Judith Piepe in London she had offered them her appartment to stay. In December 1965 Paul even gave a masterclass and did some ‘Five-to-ten’-alike radio shows, on Dutch Radio.

  1. Just a few clarifications for existing dates; the official designation for the individual states in the US is a two letter abbreviation. Thus, the following apply:

    3 MAR Cortland, NY
    12 MAR Milwaukee, WI
    18 MAR New Rochelle, NY
7 MAY Morgantown, WVA (this is one of very few exceptions to the two letter rule)
    13 MAY Nashville, TN
    3-5 JUNE Anaheim, CA
    15 JULY Lido Beach, NY
    16 JULY Hampton Beach, NH
    17 JULY Framingham, MA
    4 AUG Minneapolis, MN
    10 SEP Fairfield, CT
    8 OCT Troy, NY
    27 OCT Hartford, CT
    5 NOV Mundelein, IL
    23 NOV Meadville, PA
    9 DEC Elyria, OH
    10 DEC Waltham, MA

I hope this is of use to people looking up these cities and locations, especially those outside the US.

    1. As an executive board member of the Student Government Association of Towson College in the late 1960s, I served as the chairperson of the Special Events Committee. I was responsible for contracting speakers for lectures as well as for hiring performers for concerts and major dances. (Today, this is a full-time paid position.) In 1967, I booked Simon and Garfunkel for our Sweetheart Weekend Concert. They were phenomenal! I met with them prior to the concert, when they asked me specific questions about our college. They especially wanted to know what might trigger laughter and applause from the audience. Cleverly and inventively, they incorporated the information into their performance. I have so many fond memories of that day, as do so many others who attended the amazing concert! Our college president, Dr. Earl T. Hawkins, even thanked me personally and wrote in the college newspaper how I had arranged for Simon and Garfunkel to appear.

      1. Hello Bev Berlett Norwood, thank you for your comment. This is an unknown date so very welcome. In the meantime I have added it to the list. I also searched for the newspaper and found the Tower Light with the review and picture of the show. I will post the info a.s.a.p. on the blog. Again thanks for your help!

    1. Johns Hopkins. Also, as I remember it was held in the auditorium of the nearby Eastern High School since Shriver Hall wasn’t big enough.

      1. Fantastic, thank you for clarifying. I was at the Eastern High concert but could find no verification that it really existed. I also remember seeing them at the B’more Civic Center in 1967.

      2. Thank you for your comment. The Baltimore show would have been this one:
1967-02-12 Simon & Garfunkel Baltimore Towson University USA Valentine´s Weekend
        Or another one?

  2. As to the comments about their August ’66 appearance in Minneapolis, Dayton’s was a big department store in that city and hosted pop music shows on the eight floor of the building (The Yardbirds also appeared here in August). The fact that S&G were spotted at the Triangle Bar confirms that it was Minneaplois as this was a hangout of Bob Dylan at various times.

    1. I went to the fashion show because I saw a poster advertising they were there. It’s nice to see I verified as I’ve looked for it before and couldn’t find anything.

  3. Hello,

I’ve just discovered a new concert in 1966:

Friday 28 October Hiram, OH Hiram College Price Gym 8:00 pm
(citation: Kent State University “The Daily Kent Stater”, Thursday 13 October 1966, page 3.)

  4. Hello,

Here is another college concert date in 1966:

Sat 12 Nov Alfred, NY Alfred University Alumni Hall, 2 – 4 pm with comedians Hendra and Ullett as opening act.

  5. Hello,

    Here’s a new date for 1966:

Sat 23 April Worcester, MA Worcester Memorial Auditorium
(citation: “The Tech”, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Wed 16 March,
page one. There was a major article about the concert.)

  6. Hello,

I’ve discovered a new concert date in 1966:

Friday 18 November – Manchester, NH St Anselm College Gymnasium
The only reference to this gig was a short review by Virginia Gray.

(Citation: “The Collegiate Revolution”, New Hampshire College, December 1966, pages 1&2.)

  7. Help, please! I’m looking for any mid 60’s S & G New Paltz show! My mom and aunt took me along to a show by them, mom swears it was that location, but I was only 5 and I only recall bits and pieces of it. Was there even a New Paltz show? Or maybe mom’s recall is not good. Auntie is no longer with us, so mom’s my only source. Can anyone help? If so, a date would help out too! Thank you!

    1. Yes, there was a show at SUNY New Paltz. I was there. I’m pretty sure it was held in Elting Gym. I remember sitting on the floor quite close to the stage that had been set up for the. Like you, I’m looking for any details about that concert. I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure it was in the fall of 1966.

      1. Yes I was there at SUNY New Paltz in 1966. I was 13 and went with my older sister who was a student. We sat on the floor near the back of the gym. My first concert- so cool. I remember Paul Simon saying something about the Red Lights they were directing at him and not understanding the laughs he got. My sister later had to explain to me about “red light districts”

  8. Hello,

I’ve got a new university date for 1966; Friday 7 October Providence College Alumni Hall. This was confirmed through two websites called rirocks and ZipAuctions. An image of the poster for the show can be seen at the latter site.

  9. Hello,

I’ve got a new concert date for 1966. Saturday 29 October Selden, NY Suffolk Community College at 8 pm.

(Citation: The Long Island Advance Thursday 20 October, page 24.)

    1. If they played aconcert around Chicago I am sure it must have been in 1966. It is mention that they played:

24-11-1965 Pittsburgh, Civic Auditorium, KQF Radio Shower of Stars

??11/12-1965 Amherst, CT, University of Massachusetts, during Winter Carnaval
      1965-12-26 Indiana, PA

Paul Simon was playing in Europe late 1965 too, that’s for sure.

Did you visit the concert you are talking about?

      1. Thank you..
Yes. I was visiting relatives in Chicago for Thanksgiving. I was 15 and totally in love with their music. Had been a huge fan of the Every Brothers. Had never been to a big concert before..Saw the sign driving by..big venue..can’t remember the name. Begged to go see them..was sold out but a relative called box office and they’d just had cancellations..got to go with a cousin and had tickets in the second row!!
THE major influence on me becoming a musician and songwriter living in Nashville😀

      2. Well your comment made me “dive” into the Archives of the Chicago Tribune. Unfortunately no mentioning of a 1965 or 1966 concert there. But only the 3 shows in 1967 turned up. Even a display advertisement for the Civic Opera House performances in July, which I will post later.

    1. Simon & Garfunkel performed at Mundelein College in CHICAGO ILLINOIS in November 1966. The college, next door to Loyola University, was at 6363 North Sheridan Road. It was never located in Mundelein Illinois. If you want to check the accuracy of this information, look at the digitized version of the college newspaper, The Skyscraper, on the Loyola University Library’s digital archive. (Mundelein closed in the 1990s; Loyola took it over.) I was at the concert and remember that two Mundelein students opened for them.

      1. Thank you for your comment. I will change the info I put in my list accordingly. A lot of info is/was obtained from a large variety of sources, often before the WWW was introduced. So I am happy with all info to correct it.

      2. Found some of the newspaper you are referring to. In one of them it is mentioned that thye appeared at McCormick Place. Any idea what or where that could have been? Thanks, Rob

  10. Sometimes I wonder if memories, that seem so real to me, ever happened. I recall seeing S&G at the same venue as Sargeant Barth. Sadler of The Green Beret fame. I thought it was in the 1965-66 years and in the Atlantic City area.
That said I cannot find anything that can back any part of my memory up.

Any thoughts, aside from my being committed?

  11. Something is amiss here:

1966-09-10 Fairfield, USA, Fairfield University, Folk Festival in the Rehab Center for Crippled Children (tbc)
    1966-09-10 London, UK, Marquee Club

I vaguely remember seeing them at Fairfield University. In my memory it was outside. But I won’t swear to that. The year seems right, and I recall it was fall. Sorry if this isn’t much help what it was a long time ago.

  12. My first ever concert… 1966-06-05 Anaheim, Melodyland Theatre 3PM Sunday show with my dad!

  13. Here’s a new concert date: Sunday 6 November 1966 Charleston IL Eastern Illinois University McAfee Gym, 8pm.

    Citation – Decatur IL Herald Saturday 5 November 1966, p 11

  14. S&G did a concert at the University of Maine’s Memorial Gymnasium in Orono in the autumn of 1966 – does anyone know the date?

    1. Thank you for your comment. Could it have been November 20th? I am not sure, when it was around Bushnell it might have been a month earlier October 20th. Still working ojn a more complete list.

      1. It could have been at UConn anytime in the fall of 1966. They had afternoon concerts on Saturdays or Sundays back then…I was a freshman.

    2. Does anyone remember a Simon & Garfunkel concert around Thanksgiving time in Chicago in 1965 or 66?

On Fri, Jun 15, 2018, 7:59 AM Simon & Garfunkel ‘Time it was…it was’ wrote:

      > Terri commented: “I know I went to see S&G in 1966 at UConnr; could be > around Bushnell date in Hartford.” >

      1. Yes, definitely, pretty sure it was at the Masonic Temple in Davenport. Remembering it as November or December of 1966. I was in the sixth grade but I remember seeing them and being very impressed.

  15. Hello – I found a full page ad in Billboard magazine in the “Music On Campus” issue, 8 April 1967, page 33. It lists quite a number of colleges for Simon and Garfunkel concerts during the 1966 – 1967 school year. There are no specific dates but it is a wealth of information.

      1. Sorry, I of course meant “Hello Joe”.
But on the 33rd page I get an ad with a complaint to the music industry. Not a word about S&G unfortunately.

  16. Hello – Uncovered a new concert date; North Dakota State University Field House, Friday 4 November 1966.
citation: North Dakota State University “Spectrum” student newspaper, Wednesday 2 November 1966, page 9.

      1. Correct. I have another performance from 1967 to add. They played Hanover, New Hampshire at Dartmouth University Levernone Field House on Saturday 14 Oct.
(citation: review in the Rutland VT Daily Herald, Monday 16 October 1967, page 15.)

  17. Hello – I’ve come across an item that they played at the Columbia Records Sales Convention at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, NV in 1966. “Scheduled for the farewell banquet show on Saturday, (23) are Simon and Garfunkel.” (citation: Billboard Magazine, 23 July 1966, page 4.)

  18. Correction needed, please. Re: 1966-11-06 Decatur, Il, Eastern Illinois University McAfee Gym, 8pm

Eastern Illinois University is in Charleston, IL … NOT Decatur.

    1) I was at the concert – in person.
2). I am an alumnus of Eastern Illinois University.

    1. Hello Thomas, thanks for your comment. I have changed it immediately. Sometimes it gets confusing all thos colleges, universities, and cities and states. So all help is welcomed. Do you remember if it was just S&G or did they have a backing band with them? Kind regards!

  19. I was at the 1966 concert in Washington PA. I think it was outdoors and I don’t think there were chairs, but may be wrong. I sat right up fromt, no more than a foot or two away from Simon, close enough that I could see the set list under the strings of his guitar.

  20. I was lucky enough to have attended the 1966 concert at New Rochelle High School. The concert was held in the gymnasium. I recall sitting in the bleachers at one end of the gym with the performers at the other end. Sorry, but I don’t remember the play list other than that they played “Red Rubber Ball” which of course went on to be a hit for The Cyrkle just a few months later that year.

Just curious – the concert announcement flyer – can you tell me where you found it? I would love to get my hands on a copy, or at least a higher resolution version of the copy you have here.

    Thanks.

    1. Hello, thanks for your comment. Do you remember if they had a backing band i.e. The Cyrkle with them on stage?
I think I found the flyer on the web many years ago.
      Thanks, Rob

      1. Hello Rob –

I do not recall the backing band, I’m pretty sure there were backing musicians. The Toys and Lenny Welch also played that night. Considering the opening acts are just singers, it is very plausible that there were a set of backup musicians performing to support them, as well as Simon and Garfunkel.

I found the following on a website chronicling The Cyrkle that provides more insight:

Although their stay in the Rock ‘n’ Roll lime light was brief, The Cyrkle have earned a spot in the hearts of Classic Rock lovers for their smooth style and tight harmonies.

The founding members of The Cyrkle, guitarists Don Dannemann and Tom Dawes, met while studying at Lafayette College. Together they formed a frat band called The Rhondells, with Earl Pickens on keyboards and Marty Fried on drums, and by 1963, were regulars at Eastern Seaboard clubs. They released one single on ABC Paramount records in 1965, “Parkin’ at The Kokomo” b/w “Don’t Say That You Love Me”, which failed to gain any attention. While playing at New Jersey’s Alibi Lounge they were spotted by New York attorney Nat Weiss, who brought them to the attention of Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein. He signed The Rhondells to his NEMS roster and secured a deal with Columbia Records. When Brian mentioned to The Beatles he had an American group that needed a new moniker, John Lennon suggested the new name and attention getting spelling of The Cyrkle.

Before the band could get into the studio however, inner tensions temporarily broke them apart, leaving bassist Tom Dawes free to tour with Simon And Garfunkel. While on the road, Paul Simon played a song for Dawes called “Red Rubber Ball”, a tune he co-wrote with Bruce Woodley of The Seekers. When the tour ended, The Cyrkle reconvened and Brian Epstein chose them to open for The Beatles on their 1966 Summer tour before crowds of 70,000, a sharp contrast to the usual house of 200 to which they played during their early days. The exposure sent their debut single, “Red Rubber Ball” to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966.

      2. Hello again. A couple of years ago I was in contact with Don Danneman about the S&G-period and if they played with them during the 1966/67 performances . He wrote me that the group was indeed on the road and often played on stage with S&G. Factual information would be made available on http://www.thecyrkle.com in due time, as he was going through the archives.

  21. I was the student co-chair of SUNY Cortland’s Circulating Fund Committee, the committee was under the student Board of Governors and we were responsible for bringing acts to school.
We were just starting out and Simon and Garfunkel was our first concert which was on March 11, 1966. It was at the beginning of their 1966 tour.
The concert was not in Neubig Hall as listed as that was a dining hall but was in the HPER Gym which was in the Moffett building.
There was no opening act and Simon provided all the music on his guitar.
I can recall that they made a special introduction to “I am a Rock”, saying it was their latest song. Not sure if it had been released yet.
