  • This show was probably also broadcasted on radio by the Danish Radio. There exists a very nice recording of this show. Released on the Midnight Dreamer label (MD358).

  • This concert was broadcasted by Dutch Vara Radio on May 11th 1970. The concert started around midnight, the larger part took place on Sunday May 3rd. This concert has often been bootlegged, like ‘New Yorker in The Netherlands’. But the much famous is ‘Welcome in Holland’ which also captured a 1966 TV appearance .’

  • Announcement in Dutch musicmagazine ‘Muziek Express’ of the 1970 concert in Amsterdam (and note that a day later Leonard Cohen would be there to play, what a weekend that must have been!)

  • Simon & Garfunkel played twice (April and May) in the Royal Albert Hall. The 2 concerts were sold out in within hours. And many people were very ‘unlucky’ not being able to attend the events. Promotor Tito Burns even received ‘two letters threatening me with violence unless I send them tickets, and I am sure a lot of tickets must be on the black market now’, he told DISC-magazine in 1970. No recordings were made by BBC Radio.

  • Well not much concerts of Simon & Garfunkel during the rest of the 70’s. Some ‘reuniting’ events where they played both were done. They even were recording with John Lennion and Harry Nilsson. The tapes of that sessions were recently sold on Bonhams’.  In 1975 they recorded ‘My little town’ (‘a nasty song for Artie’ as Paul discribed it)they performed very succesfully in the Saturday Night Live show, hosted by Paul Simon.

1972-06-14 New York City, Madison Square Gardens, George McGovern Benefit Show.

  • During his campaign to become president of the US, George McGovern had a lot of artists who joined him during his campaign. James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, but most remarkably Simon & Garfunkel teamed up again too. Paul & Art were also in 1968 doing one (or more) benefit-shows for a democratic candidate: Eugene McCarthy.

  1. Hello.
Not sure if this site is still active but it’s very interesting, useful site and now a question!

Greatest Hits has two songs attributed to ‘Live at Carnegie Hall, New York, NY – July 1970’ (https://www.highresaudio.com/en/album/view/3jokxg/simon-garfunkel-greatest-hits-remastered-in-192khz#albumtab-info) for example. Google shows mentions of 2 nights of concerts at Carnegie Hall in July after the spring European tour but no one has the date! A search of the performances at Carnegie Hall for 1969 – 1970, only shows the November 27 1969 show – https://collections.carnegiehall.org/CS.aspx?VP3=SearchResult&VBID=2RRMLBZYKVGPW&SMLS=1&RW=1112&RH=708#/SearchResult&VBID=2RRMLBZ0FG7I3&SMLS=1&RW=1112&RH=708.

Could it be that they never played Carnegie Hall in July 1970? It seems strange that I can’t find any details of the actual date at a prestigious concert hall on the internet – and that you don’t list it either!

If they didn’t play at Carnegie Hall in July 1970, then where were the two live tracks on ‘Greatest Hits’ recorded? could it be instead the 1970-07-17 New York City, USA, Forest Hills Tennis Stadium concert is the concert where the two were recorded?

    1. Hello David, this site is still alive but at slow-pace at the moment. Sorry about that, even as there’s still so much to mention about Simon & Garfunkel. About your question: at this moment I am still not sure where the live tracks were recorded that ended up on the Greatest Hits album. Not one re-release of this album on cd brings the answer and at Columbia/Sony no one will answer to a question. So, I will have to keep digging. One thing is sure that most of the concerts S&G did in 1969 were recorded, possibly for a live-album. The first Japanese release of the “Bridge over troubled water”-album mentions the recording dates and places of all 11 eleven songs. ” Bye Bye Love” was recorded in Akron (Ohio). After the Forest Hills concert, they incidentally sang together, short sets, but not a complete show at Carnegie Hall.

      1. The highresaudio site does list the locations of the live recordings if you scroll down. However it only lists month, year and location. Kathy’s Song and Emily are both 11/69 in St Louis. Given your other research, cant we conclude that it was the Nov 2?

This leaves the other 2 recorded in Carnegie Hall, July 1970. There is also a mention of Carnegie Hall on Art Garfunkel’s official page. I find it perplexing that I cant find information on Simon and Garfunkel playing at Carnegie Hall in July of 1970, regardless of if this is where two song on Greatest Hits were recorded or that it was the last major concert of theirs for a while!

        What is going on? 😀
